Importer checklist

What should you check before importing charcoal into the EU?

Start with the actual product, supplier offer and delivery route. Ask for the lot specification, packaging details, net and gross weights, and a written price showing which transport costs are included. Your customs representative and carrier then confirm the documents and requirements for that shipment.

What should you check before importing charcoal into the EU?

Define the product before comparing offers

Specify the charcoal type, intended use, piece size, bag weight and any private-label requirement. Ask for current photos and available test or specification documents. Wood briquettes for heating and charcoal briquettes for barbecues are different products; identify them separately in the inquiry.

Have your broker confirm the applicable tariff classification, duty and tax treatment using the composition, origin and destination. Do not assume that a shipment from Skopje establishes North Macedonian origin or automatically qualifies for a preferential duty rate.

Agree transport and customs responsibilities

Provide the delivery address and postcode, requested timing, access restrictions and unloading facilities. A container quote should identify the container size and agreed net load; a pallet or truck quote should identify the number of handling units and weights.

Ask the quotation to identify the named delivery place and commercial terms. Your broker should confirm who acts as importer, where clearance takes place, whether transit procedures are needed, and which taxes and charges fall to each party. Clearance is not necessarily completed at the first EU border.

Check current EUDR obligations

The European Commission lists 30 December 2026 for large and medium operators and for micro and small operators already covered by the EU Timber Regulation. Other micro and small operators have a 30 June 2027 application date. Check the current product scope and your role with your adviser before placing an affected order.

Ask what traceability and origin information is available for the particular lot and when it can be supplied. Supplier documents or a certification label do not, by themselves, complete the buyer’s legal obligations.

Use the 2026 maritime rules for charcoal

IMDG Amendment 42-24 applies from 1 January 2026. The former charcoal exemptions were removed and Special Provision 978 was added for UN 1361. Do not book charcoal as non-dangerous cargo using the former SP 925 exemption. Obtain the carrier’s current acceptance and documentation requirements for the shipment.

For any road leg, have the qualified carrier or dangerous-goods adviser determine the applicable classification and requirements. Maritime and road rules are different; that distinction does not justify a blanket claim that road charcoal needs no dangerous-goods paperwork.

Confirm documents before dispatch

Ask for a commercial invoice, packing list and the appropriate transport document, plus the origin and safety documentation required for the transaction. Have your broker review the drafts before dispatch and check that the product descriptions and weights agree.

For a first order, discuss available samples or a visit, request current packaging photographs, and confirm all commercial terms in writing. The checklist here helps structure an inquiry; your broker and carrier must confirm the requirements for the actual goods and route.

Questions buyers ask

Can I use an old SP 925 certificate to book non-DG charcoal?

Do not rely on the former exemption for a 2026 sea booking. IMDG Amendment 42-24 removed the previous charcoal exemptions. Confirm the current requirements with the carrier.

Does dispatch from North Macedonia prove preferential origin?

No. Origin depends on the goods and applicable rules. Ask which documents are available for the actual lot and have your customs representative confirm their use.

What should I send to Virovo Promet for a quotation?

Product, quantity, packaging, delivery address, requested date and any label or documentation requirements. Ask for written confirmation of availability, price, payment and delivery terms.
